• Wear open-toed shoes whenever possible.
• Avoid hot baths or saunas the same day.
• For gel polish, you're instantly set—just avoid heavy lotions for a few hours.

Daily habits

• Moisturize every day. A rich lotion or cuticle oil keeps skin and nails flexible and prevents cracking.
• Wear supportive shoes. Tight, narrow shoes push on nails and cause polish to chip or nails to curve.
• Use sunscreen on your feet. Yes, feet burn—especially in Florida. This also keeps polish from yellowing.

Weekly habits

• Gently file any rough edges if a nail snags.
• Use a pumice or foot file lightly on heels—never aggressively.
• Reapply a clear top coat if you wear regular polish; it can add several days of wear.

What to avoid

• Peeling off gel polish—it strips the nail surface.
• Using nails as tools to open cans or boxes.
• Walking barefoot in locker rooms or public showers (wear slides to protect your feet).
• Cutting cuticles at home—pushing them gently with a soft towel is safer.

Foot care between pedicures
